A Health promoting school is one that constantly strengthens its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working. This idea proposed by World Health Organization (WHO), was developed in the 1980s and was vigorously promoted by many countries. Historically, the Health Promoting School European Network was established in 1992, and the International Planning Committee disclosed the model of HPS in Europe based on 10 years practice there. However, the HPS network in Asia faces different challenges from the one in Europe. In Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan started the HPS project as a national Project from 1996. Japan is taking a leading role in this project, although the historical background and style of the initiative here are different from that of other countries. In Japan, we are involved in research and practice for this HPS project and are publishing our results.
